Second Foundation by Isaac Asimov
Published by Bantam Books
Reviewed by Leigh Kimmel
This volume is the third in the classic science fiction saga of the Foundation, an organization created to keep science alive after the fall of the Galactic Empire. They seemed to be succeeding well enough, until the appearance of a mutant who could not be predicted by the Seldon Plan.
This is the master blueprint for the rebuilding of the Galactic Empire, constructed by the architect of the Foundation. However, he did not trust his plan entirely to the blind forces of history.
The Foundation is in truth only one of two Foundations. It will specialize in the physical sciences and operate openly, while the Second Foundation will work in secret on mental sciences, most specifically that of psychohistory that enables the prediction of the future.
This secret organization is the galaxy's only hope against the Mule, the mutant whose telepathic persuasive ability enabled him to conquor all who stood in his way. But in acting, the Second Foundation will lose their greatest strength -- the secret of their existance.
