Patriots by David Drake
Published by Tor Books
Reviewed by Leigh Kimmel
In this novel by one of the leading writers of military science fiction, Mark Maxwell is a rather naive young man from a long-settled world. Having just finished his education, he is getting a year's vacation on a a frontier world before settling down in his father's law firm.
However all that changes with a chance encounter in a spaceport. There he meets Yerby Brannock, who convinces him to abandon his planned itenary and visit the real frontier. Off he goes to Greenwood, a world in dispute because of conflicting colonial charters.
Without ever meaning to, Mark is drawn into local politics and soon finds himself defending his new-found friends' claims to the land they have settled and cultivated, against those who would bring in giant pre-fab cities full of the dregs of older worlds' populations. He soon learns more than he ever wanted to know about the ins and outs of political maneuvering and of actual combat.
