Heart's Blood cover Heart's Blood by Jane Yolen

Published by Harcourt Brace

Reviewed by Leigh Kimmel

Young Jakkin won his freedom and admission into the master class of his homeworld, former penal colony Austar IV, through the prowess of his fighting dragon. But being a master isn't nearly so easy as it had always seemed when he was a bonder. Out of loyalty he had purchased his closest friend, but Erikkin seems perversely determined to force him into becoming the very sort of cruel master he despises.

Meanwhile, outside events are pressing themselves upon his attention. For years many bonders have been frustrated by the inequities of the system and angry at the various ways in which they are marked out as the descendants of criminals. But now that anger, denied any outlet in legitimate protest, has turned to desperate violence.

Suddenly all of Jakkin's simple plans are shattered in a terrorist explosion. Now he must find a way to steer safely through a world turned topsy-turvy, where he isn't even sure who is friend or enemy.
