Foundation and Empire cover Foundation and Empire by Isaac Asimov

Published by Bantam Books

Reviewed by Leigh Kimmel

This volume continues the classic science fiction saga of the Foundation. Created to preserve scientific knowledge against the night of barbarism that would follow the fall of the Galactic Empire, they seem to be succeeding quite well.

Now the growing power of the Foundation sets it onto a direct collision course with a resurgent remnant of that very Empire. But the Foundation has the Seldon Plan behind it, a detailed prediction of the future created by the new science of psychohistory.

However, it is possible that the Foundation is relying too heavily on the Seldon Plan. Psychohistory deals with masses and averages, not individuals. It cannot account for chance events, such as the appearance of a mutant with unexpected powers.
